SELIE FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL
What is my subject?
The letter box.
What is it about?
The box is full of letters and postcards. The letters are between two characters that I created. The story is about a Korean girl who just arrived in America for school. She sends letters to her friend in Korea to tell stories about her new life in America. Things are unfamiliar, weird, funny and stimulating for her.
What do I analyze?
What I’m trying to express from my project is how outsiders see life in America. How cultural differences can affect people who are from different countries. The different perspectives about how it feels to live in America as a foreigner.
How did I get this idea?
I always wanted to write a story using only letters. I think it is a really interesting writing style. When you write a book, you expect other people to read it so you express yourself carefully. However, when you write a letter it is not intended for anybody else to read other than the person you are writing to. Therefore, the writers can explains situation informally, directly and emotionally honestly. Therefore, it is good way to explain things are like culture.
What's distinctive or impressive about my story?
The reason I choose a 20 year-old girl as a character is I think that people at that age have a pretty stable identity, but at the same time they are flexible enough to accept the different culture. They can assimilate easier than old people. However, most importantly I can be very close with this character because I’m in the exactly same situation. Therefore, I can express her situation naturally to make the audience understand.
